Smart Energy Summit- Schneider Electric to Develop Connected Relay Technology

Smart Energy Summit- Schneider Electric to Develop Connected Relay Technology, Providing First-of-its-Kind Circuit Level Control and Monitoring for Homeowners | #TpromoCom | Developed in partnership with Savant Power, a division of Savant Systems, Inc., Schneider Electric will launch the remote-control connected relay in Q1 2022

This new innovation optimizes backup source capacity and provides flexibility and control at the individual circuit level for homeowners

Designed as a companion module to the QO Plug-On Neutral breaker, this is the next step in Schneider Electric’s grid-to-plug home energy management solution

BOSTON – Oct. 27, 2021 - Schneider Electric, the leader in the digital transformation of energy management and automation, today announced development of a remote control relay for launch in Q1 2022. When wired to the QO Plug-On Neutral breaker, this offer will provide industry-leading monitoring and control of the homeowner’s power loads, including configurations to maximize back up power in the event of an outage. This innovation, designed in partnership with Savant Power, adds a new level of control at the branch level to address quickly evolving customer needs while enhancing safety.

The connected relay device will enable homeowners to see, monitor and control their home energy at the individual circuit level, all from the Wiser Energy app. With more granular insights on home activity, homeowners will have the ability to take action from anywhere with a richer automation experience. The relays will optimize backup source capacity, notably providing flexibility for homeowners when navigating outages.

“With home energy use constantly on the rise, managing demand is more important to potential homebuyers than ever before, in turn giving builders an opportunity to increase the value of their new builds by offering energy management technology,” said Richard Korthauer, Vice President, Home & Distribution, Schneider Electric. “Incorporating this technology at the building stage offers a new step up in load level control to distinguish new homes that minimize energy costs for homeowners in this dynamic energy market and provide new level of energy resiliency and safety at the breaker level.”

“Savant Power, a division of Savant Systems, Inc. enables consumers to monitor, control and optimize energy usage, reducing costs and lessening their dependence on an aging grid system,” said Robert Madonna CEO, Savant Systems Inc. “We are excited to partner with Schneider Electric, bringing sustainability and efficiency to every homeowner through intelligent load management. Savant has been leading the smart home industry for over 15 years by automating all pillars of the home including climate, lighting, entertainment, security and now energy all driven by our award-winning software platform.”

As the most sustainable corporation in the world, Schneider Electric recognizes the challenge facing today’s homeowners in balancing the increasing need for residential energy, energy resiliency and convenience. The new connected relays will allow homeowners to monitor and control their energy at the circuit level, including electric water heaters, ovens, HVAC systems, or any other circuit. For example, if a homeowner was concerned that they left the oven on after leaving the home, this would allow then to check, then turn that appliance off at the circuit remotely, preventing a potentially dangerous situation.

These relays will also help optimize non-utility home energy resources – including solar power, energy storage and generators – in the event of an outage. By creating a virtual configurable critical load panel for each backup power source, available power can be maximized by sending it to only a few priority circuits until the utility power is restored. Automated through the Wiser Energy app, these configurations provide true smart energy management for today’s homeowner.

Key features of the new connected relays will include:
·        Load level control capability
·        Richer automation experience with granular insights into energy use
·        Modular and scalable to address a variety of needs
·        Added flexibility for homeowners when navigating outages

The device will be available in Q1 of 2022. For more information on this and other grid-to-plug innovations for the connected home, please visit

Best IoT-driven Home Automation Protocols (image)
Best IoT-driven Home Automation Protocols | #TpromoCom #HomeAutomation #SmartHome #IoT | If you own a talking virtual assistant like Alexa, a wearable device like FitBit or a smart television, you are already experiencing IoT at fundamental levels (iotbusinessnews).

Though these standalone devices don’t make up for an IoT based home automation solution, they still communicate with each other for data and insights.

Generally, brand manufacturers have their own distinct operating protocols for their range of products and services, where the language of one device wouldn’t be understood by another device, or data interoperability would simply be restricted and more.

Amazon is not Slowing Down in the Smart Home Space

Amazon is not Slowing Down in the Smart Home Space | #TpromoCom #Amazon #HomeAutomation #SmartHome | Following the plethora of smart home announcements showcased at CES earlier this year, the smart home space continues to see a lot of activity in the first half of 2021, particularly in product and user-interface innovation.

Amazon, in particular, announced new products, added new features to existing devices, and continued its efforts to expand product capabilities and provide additional value and features for its Ring and Echo users.

Ring introduced a trio of outdoor smart home security devices. The new outdoor siren and wall lights are consistent with Ring’s home security strategy, which is centered on crime deterrence. Ring also debuted a new $60 video doorbell, the company’s cheapest video doorbell yet. With lower-priced products becoming increasingly available in the competitive smart home market, Ring is also taking measures to improve the value of its existing products. The company introduced a Smart Responses feature powered by Alexa for its video doorbells and announced the long-awaited Geofence feature for all Ring camera devices. By adding these additional features to its already successful products, Ring is continuing to assert its dominance and competitiveness of its devices in the market. (read more

Project Connected Home over IP Releases Details and Roadmap

Project Connected Home over IP Releases Details and Roadmap
| #TpromoCom #HomeAutomation #ConnectedHome #HomeControl | It’s no secret that fragmentation plagues the smart home (ParksAssociates).

Due to an incredibly diverse ecosystem of products, plus numerous competing communication protocols, seamless device-to-device interaction is difficult to achieve. For instance, 40% of smart home device owners who have had technical problems with a smart home device report having difficulty getting the device to interact with other devices in their home.

Device-to-device integration issues are among the top 4 technical issues smart home device owners experience, along with loss of wireless connectivity, device unresponsiveness, and short battery life.

Major industry players, including Apple, Amazon, Google, Samsung, Comcast, NXP, and others joined with the Zigbee Alliance in December 2019 to launch Project Connected home over IP, also known as Project CHIP. Project CHIP is an open source, single IP-based standard designed to... (read more)

12M US households have cut the cord and 15M have mobile broadband only

12M US households have cut the cord and 15M have mobile broadband only
| #TpromoCom #Broadband #Cellular #Internet | Parks Associates estimates that across the US, 15 million households are currently mobile-only – which means that household members have mobile data plans but do not have a home internet subscription (Parks).

Of this 15 million, 12 million were at one point fixed broadband subscribers. That is, for one reason or another, they cancelled their home broadband service. Some of the most common reasons are included in the chart below:

2020 and its assorted pressures – the shelter in place early in the year, social distancing measures, remote work and schooling – increased consumers’ reliance on the internet, and served to slow down growth in mobile-only households and actually encourage many consumers to re-subscribe to home internet. For example, although an estimated 4 million mobile-only households were new to the category as of September, the mobile-only category as a whole grew by just 600,000 – indicating considerable turnover in this segment in the past year.

Adoption and Perception of Broadband finds that smart Wi-Fi or mesh networking products that would improve Wi-Fi coverage are powerful incentives to staunch churn, as 75% of households likely to switch would stay with their current provider if offered these solutions. Currently 94% of all US broadband households use Wi-Fi networking at home, and more than half report problems with their internet experience.

With 5G deployment and adoption accelerating, as well as COVID-19 vaccines rolling out, it remains to be seen if growth in mobile-only will resume to its pre-2020 levels, or if the COVID-19 tailwinds have helped to permanently stem broadband cord-cutting.
