Close loopholes so only 'patriots' can run Hong Kong – Chinese official
 | #TpromoCom | Speculation grows China seeking to block opposition candidates and overhaul judiciary (Guardian) http://bit.ly/3si5bgb

A top Chinese official has outlined plans to ensure only “patriots” run Hong Kong, as Beijing seeks to neuter any remaining democratic opposition and take a more direct role in how the business hub is run.

The landmark speech by Xia Baolong, the head of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office, came two weeks before the annual meeting of China’s rubber-stamp legislature and as speculation grew that further measures were being planned to sew up control of the city. (read more)

BASF advances renewable energy commitment with wind and solar power contracts

BASF advances renewable energy commitment with wind and solar power contracts
 | #TpromoCom | BASF is collaborating with EDF Energy North America to improve the energy balance and reduce CO2 emissions of two of its production sites in Texas (globenewswire).  https://bit.ly/3peF3ko

The companies have signed a 35 MW Wind Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) that will bring 25 MW wind power to BASF’s Verbund site in Freeport and 10 MW wind power to the Pasadena site. The agreement adds to another recently announced PPA that will supply the Freeport site with 55 MW power from EDF Renewables’ Space City Solar project.

“The agreements underline BASF’s commitment to sustainability. Manufacturing products for sustainable solutions, reducing emissions from our processes and using non-fossil fueled energy sources – all of these efforts help lead us on our continuing journey of sustainability,” said Chris Witte, Senior Vice President and General Manager for the BASF site in Freeport. “The addition of renewable energy to our Texas sites will ultimately benefit all three areas: sustainable products, processes and power.”

The projects will significantly improve the energy balance of both BASF sites and further complement the company’s overall sustainability goals. Approximately 70% of the energy supply to the Pasadena site and more than 90% of the power purchased in addition to the energy produced at Freeport site will be supplied from renewable resources. This equals the energy consumption of more than 10,500 households.

The addition of wind and solar power to BASF’s energy portfolio further enhances the company’s advancement toward its climate protection goal of CO2 neutral growth until 2030. As part of its ambitious Carbon Management program, BASF is gradually replacing fossil fuels with renewable energy sources. At the same time, the partnership ensures the reliability of the BASF assets and increases efficiency and competitiveness at both sites.

EDF Energy North America is an industry leader in renewable energy solutions. The wind farm selected to supply BASF is located in Crocket County, Texas. The planned start date for providing the BASF sites wind power is June 2021. EDF Renewable’s Space City Solar in Wharton, Texas, is expected to begin construction in Summer 2021 and renewable energy supply will start mid-2022.

85% of US security dealers report they provide extra services

85% of US security dealers report they provide extra services | #TpromoCom #Business #Security #Integrators | such as connected health and home network services, beyond professional monitoring

DIY, smart home, and interactive services focus of 8th annual Security Dealer Study, with research featured at CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES sessions

New security dealer research from Parks Associates shows 85% of security dealers report they provide extra services beyond professional monitoring, including video verification, PERS, cybersecurity, and independent living services. The international research firm’s annual study Home Security Dealers: View from the Front Line, now in its eighth year, provides trending data and current insights based on a survey of US dealers studying their view of the security market, competitive pressures, industry conditions, and new trends, including the addition of smart home and interactive technologies. The study reports only 15% of dealers provide no extra services beyond professional monitoring.

“Going forward, greater emphasis will be placed on PERS and independent living services,” said Brad Russell, Research Director, Parks Associates. “The devastating impact of COVID-19 in senior living facilities ensures that more seniors will want to stay in their homes or apartments and their families want to help that happen.”

In Parks Associates’ Q2 consumer survey of 10,000 US broadband households, 24% of consumers report having completed some home improvement project during the pandemic, many of them choosing to do-it-themselves.

“This DIY trend is driving revenue growth for home improvement stores like Ace, Lowe’s, and Home Depot,” Russell said. “It also drives an increasing share of consumers choosing DIY security systems. This year’s consumer surveys show a big jump in the percentage of home security system purchases that are DIY with professional monitoring. Our dealer survey finds that this ecosystem is responding to this market shift, with 43% of traditional security dealers now offering DIY systems in addition to pro-installed.”

Additional security dealer research findings:

25% of dealers report providing fee deferments or relief to customers during COVID-19.

Professionally installed systems have declined by nearly 25% since 2017.

The sales of DIY systems have increased by nearly 60% since 2017.

Parks Associates will present this research at the upcoming CONNECTIONS™ Summit: Smart Home Growth Strategies, a CES Conference Partner taking place January 14. CONNECTIONS™ Summit at CES is an annual research and industry event hosted by international research firm Parks Associates at CES. In 2021, the executive event features virtual panel discussions on the smart home, Internet of Things (IoT), connected health, and home security and automation, with trends and implications for connected consumers and opportunities for companies to build new revenues and develop innovative business models. Early sponsors include Alarm.com, AmTrust Financial Services, and AirTies.

Researchers Say Dozens of GE Medical Devices Could Expose Patient Data | #TpromoCom #Medical #Healthcare # | The vulnerable devices are used for CT scans, MRIs, mammograms, ultrasounds and positron emission tomography (

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued a warning to hospitals and other healthcare facilities on Tuesday about dozens of GE Healthcare imaging and ultrasound products. According to CISA, an authentication flaw in them poses a serious risk to protected health information.

“A successful exploitation could expose sensitive data such as a limited set of patient health information (PHI) or could allow the attacker to run arbitrary code, which might impact the availability of the system and allow manipulation of PHI,” the warning said.
